VISION HEALTH INFORMATION DAY - CATSKILL, NY

VISION HEALTH INFORMATION DAY TO BE HOSTED AT THE WASHINGTON IRVING SENIOR CENTER

Catskill, NY – A “Vision Health Information Day” will be held on Thursday May 30, 2013 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the Washington Irving Senior Center, 15 Academy Street, Catskill. Co-sponsored by the Northeastern Association of the Blind at Albany (NABA), the purpose of the event is to educate the community about the latest research in and treatment of eye diseases, including the leading causes of vision loss in older Americans, as well as adaptive aids, technologies and services available to people with low vision.

Board certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Alexandra Pappas and Cheryl Lawyer, NABA Outreach & Education Coordinator, will be the featured speakers. Dr. Pappas practices with the Mid-Hudson Medical Group and will speak on the topic “Macular Degeneration & Nutritional Supplementation”.  Dr. Pappas completed her medical degree at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, her residency at St. Vincent’s Catholic Medical Center where she served as chief resident and her medical retina fellowship at New York University.  She is a member of the NYS Ophthalmological Society, the American Medical Society and has been published in many medical journals. Ms. Lawyer, a New York State Certified Teacher, provides community education about vision loss and NABA’s vision rehabilitation services. She is also an active community volunteer raising and training puppies to be guide dogs.

For over 100 years, NABA has been providing services to the blind and visually impaired.  NABA’s Dr. Harry M. Judge Vision Rehabilitation Center provides vision examinations by a low vision specialist/optometrist for the prescription of low vision adaptive aids, such as magnifiers and special glasses. Low vision technologies such as closed circuit televisions and electronic readers can also be demonstrated at NABA’s facility at 301 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY and will be available for viewing at the event.  For appointments, call (518) 463-1211.
